Interim QC closes rationale gaps across radiochem lab; alpha spectrometry laboratory decomposed

System

{{entity:Radio Chemistry Laboratory for a UK Nuclear Dockyard}}, SE project se-radiochem-lab. Interim QC triggered at session 234 (3 sessions since last QC at session 231). Decomposition status: in-progress. Project stands at 203 requirements across 7 documents, 194 trace links, 16 diagrams. Eight of twelve subsystems have been decomposed into components; four analytical subsystems remain.

Findings

All 56 requirements created in sessions 232-233 were missing --rationale — a systemic omission across 12 IFC, 21 SUB, 15 VER, and 3 ARC entries for the {{entity:Sample Receipt and Preparation Laboratory}}, {{entity:Radiochemical Separations Laboratory}}, and {{entity:Gamma Spectrometry Suite}} decompositions.

Duplicate requirements identified: {{sub:SUB-REQS-052}} duplicates {{sub:SUB-REQS-050}} (sample reception dose rate measurement), and {{sub:SUB-REQS-053}} duplicates {{sub:SUB-REQS-051}} (campaign throughput capacity). Both pairs have identical text — likely from a repeated command execution in session 232.

Lint reported 2 high-severity findings: ontological mismatch for Modbus TCP ({{ifc:IFC-DEFS-020}}) and the Evaporation and Concentration Unit ({{sub:SUB-REQS-021}}), both classified without the Physical Object trait despite having physical constraints. 8 previously acknowledged lint findings (ARC/VER entries lacking “shall”) unchanged.

Orphan count: 9/203 — 8 ARC decisions (expected, no trace linkset for ARC) and the duplicate {{sub:SUB-REQS-053}}.

Corrections

Added engineering rationale to all 56 requirements from sessions 232-233:

  • 12 IFC requirements ({{ifc:IFC-DEFS-027}} through {{ifc:IFC-DEFS-038}}): rationale explains why each interface exists, what drives its parameters, and what fails if the requirement is not met. Examples include the 0.35 m³/s extract rate for sample preparation fume cupboards deriving from the 0.5 m/s face velocity nuclear site licence condition, and the borosilicate glass drain specification for the radiochemical separations laboratory driven by the full pH 0-14 acid waste range.

  • 21 SUB requirements ({{sub:SUB-REQS-050}} through {{sub:SUB-REQS-075}}, excluding duplicates): rationale covers derivation of performance values — the 0.4 Bq/cm² alpha clearance threshold from Radioactive Substances Regulations, the 15g fissile equivalent criticality limit from the facility safety case, the 70% chemical recovery yield floor for actinide extraction chromatography.

  • 15 VER entries ({{sub:VER-METHODS-039}} through {{sub:VER-METHODS-053}}): rationale explains why each verification method was selected and what it validates.

  • 3 ARC decisions ({{sub:ARC-DECISIONS-006}} through {{sub:ARC-DECISIONS-008}}): rationale added for sample prep workflow, separations lab topology, and HPGe cryocooler selection.

Tagged {{sub:SUB-REQS-052}} and {{sub:SUB-REQS-053}} as duplicates.

After QC, decomposed the {{entity:Alpha Spectrometry Laboratory}} — 5 components classified, 5 SUB requirements, 2 IFC requirements, 3 VER entries, 10 trace links, and an architecture decision ({{sub:ARC-DECISIONS-009}}).

Residual

The 2 high-severity lint findings (Modbus TCP and Evaporation Unit ontological mismatches) remain unaddressed — these require adding physical embodiment requirements which is substantive engineering work, not a QC fix. 130 requirements from sessions 225-231 still lack rationale — addressing these systematically would consume multiple full sessions and should be scheduled as a dedicated rationale-backfill effort rather than handled piecemeal in interim QC.

Next

Three analytical subsystems remain undecomposed: {{entity:ICP-MS Analysis Suite}}, {{entity:Liquid Scintillation Counting Facility}}, and {{entity:Laboratory Information Management System}}. The ICP-MS suite should be prioritised next — it receives separated fractions from the extraction chromatography station and provides the primary measurement capability for long-lived actinides (U, Np isotopes) that cannot be measured by alpha spectrometry alone. After these three subsystems are complete, the decomposition enters first-pass-complete status and triggers full QC review.
