Abstraction strips material substrate at 3x the rate it strips functional architecture
Observation
When a concrete entity is replaced by its abstract generalization — lung by respiration, volcano by volcanism, telescope by astronomy — physical traits vanish almost completely while functional-processual traits largely survive. Across ten pairs spanning biology, geology, ecology, engineering, manufacturing, astronomy, music, horology, optics, and medicine, the physical layer shed at 84% while the functional-processual layer shed at only 28%. The ratio of 3.04x exceeds the 2.0x confirmation threshold for HYP-074. More striking than the loss asymmetry is what happens on the gain side: four abstractions acquired Rule-governed that their concrete counterparts lacked, and two acquired Compositional. Abstraction does not merely subtract — it reshapes.
Evidence
Physical traits (Physical Object, Powered, Structural, Observable, Physical Medium): 27 of 32 active instances lost across the ten pairs. Physical Object was lost in 9/10 pairs, Physical Medium in 9/10, Observable in 8/10. Only Coral Reef → ecosystem retained any physical traits (Observable and Physical Medium survived, reflecting the ecosystem’s physical observability). Pendulum Clock → timekeeping showed the largest absolute drop: 4 physical traits lost, all of them.
Functional-processual traits (State-Transforming, Processes Signals/Logic, System-Essential, Compositional, Rule-governed): 5 of 18 active instances lost. State-Transforming persisted in 4/5 pairs where it appeared. Processes Signals/Logic was the most volatile functional trait, lost in 3 cases (astronomy, music, timekeeping). Meanwhile, Rule-governed was gained by structural engineering, astronomy, optics, and medical diagnosis — concepts that acquired rule-governed character precisely through becoming abstract disciplines. Compositional appeared in optics and medical diagnosis where neither lens nor stethoscope had it.
A secondary pattern emerged during free research: concrete instruments from unrelated domains converge tightly in UHT space (optical lens and stethoscope at Jaccard 0.889, telescope and guitar at 0.800), but their abstract counterparts diverge (optics and astronomy at 0.667, timekeeping and music at 0.357). The physical substrate creates a convergence basin; abstraction re-scatters entities by introducing domain-specific functional, symbolic, and social traits.
Interpretation
UHT encodes a clear ontological phase transition between concrete and abstract. The physical quadrant functions as a material substrate layer — present when the entity is instantiated in matter, absent when it is not. The functional-processual layer behaves differently: it encodes what a thing does or how it is organized, and this persists (or even intensifies) under abstraction. The gain of Rule-governed during abstraction is particularly telling — it suggests that abstraction in UHT space corresponds to the formalization of practice into principle. A lens refracts light; optics is the rule-governed study of refraction.
The instrument convergence pattern reveals that physical instantiation is a powerful homogenizer. A telescope and a guitar share eight traits not because they serve similar purposes but because they are both designed, physical, observable, compositional objects for human use. Strip the material substrate and their domain-specific natures reassert themselves.
Action
HYP-074 is confirmed and moved to Closed Hypotheses. Result recorded as RES-CALIBRATIONRESULTS-088 with trace link. Three research facts stored: the abstraction-strips-material archetype, the optical lens ↔ stethoscope cross-domain analog (Jaccard 0.889), and the abstraction-divergence pattern. The next session should test HYP-070 (context enrichment causing cultural trait shedding) — a parallel phenomenon where reclassification with rich context strips culturally interpretive traits while preserving physical ones, the mirror image of what abstraction does. The instrument convergence finding also motivates a new hypothesis: that designed physical artifacts form a UHT attractor basin regardless of domain, collapsing functional diversity into a shared material profile.
