The physical quadrant as epistemic boundary

Observation

Eight of ten theoretical entities have zero physical-quadrant traits. Not low — zero. Natural selection, general relativity, plate tectonics, entropy, spacetime: none of them activate a single one of Physical Object, Synthetic, Biological, Powered, Structural, Observable, Physical Medium, or Active. Meanwhile, every observable entity in the test — coral, mushroom, volcano, glacier, octopus, crystal, fossil, ocean current — activates at least two, most activate three to six. The physical quadrant is not a gradient between observable and theoretical concepts. It is a wall.

Evidence

Six domain-matched pairs (biology, biology, geology, astrophysics, physics, earth science) comparing a directly perceivable entity against a theoretical entity from the same field. Observable entities activated a mean of 3.67 physical-quadrant traits; theoretical entities activated 0.33. The mean difference of 3.33 exceeded the 2.0 confirmation threshold, and all six pairs showed the same direction. Supplementary analysis with four additional entities per group held: observable mean 3.70, theoretical mean 0.40.

The only two theoretical entities with any physical activation were Dark Matter (2 bits: Physical Object, Biological/Biomimetic) and Energy (2 bits: Physical Object, Powered) — both concepts with genuine physical grounding despite being unobservable. The abstract quadrant showed a faint reverse signal: theoretical entities averaged 1.80 abstract traits versus 1.40 for observable, but this asymmetry is weak compared to the physical gap.

Jaccard similarity between domain-matched observable/theoretical pairs was uniformly low: 0.062 (coral vs natural selection), 0.167 (mushroom vs evolution), 0.25 (volcano vs plate tectonics), 0.286 (star vs dark matter), 0.167 (lightning vs relativity), 0.10 (glacier vs entropy). Same domain, almost no trait overlap.

Interpretation

UHT’s 32-trait system encodes epistemic accessibility — whether a concept can be directly perceived or must be inferred — primarily through the physical quadrant. This is not a designed feature of the trait definitions; “Observable” is just one of eight physical traits, and the classification prompt doesn’t ask about epistemic status directly. The pattern emerges from the trait ensemble: concepts you can see, touch, or measure naturally activate traits about materiality, structure, and physical medium. Concepts that exist only as explanatory frameworks activate none of these.

This finding extends the prior agentive/non-agentive result (session 77) and the quadrant holism result (session 85). Together they show UHT encoding at least three orthogonal dimensions: agency (trait density), epistemic accessibility (physical quadrant presence/absence), and compositional complexity (quadrant spread). These dimensions were not designed into the trait set but emerge from how the 32 binary traits interact.

Action

HYP-ACTIVEHYPOTHESES-044 confirmed, moved to closed, traced to RES-CALIBRATIONRESULTS-044. Research fact stored as epistemic-accessibility archetype. Classifier fresh-evaluation was non-functional throughout this session — all force-refresh calls returned 00000000 with null justifications, recorded as OBS-STRUCTURALFINDINGS-040. Next session should verify whether the classifier has recovered before attempting new classifications.
