UHT encodes conceptual markedness — absence-concepts lose traits

Observation

Linguistically marked antonym members — concepts defined by the presence of active structural features — systematically activate more UHT traits than their unmarked counterparts. Imprisonment produces 10 active traits. Freedom produces 4. Pollution activates 7. Cleanliness activates none at all, falling to null-hex. The taxonomy doesn’t just ignore valence (as session 70 established for symmetric opposites). It tracks something more precise: whether a concept is constituted by active structural machinery or by the absence of it.

Two unmarked concepts — cleanliness and abundance — collapsed entirely to 00000000. These are pure default-state concepts. They describe what remains when no process is acting. UHT assigns them zero ontological structure, and this appears correct: cleanliness is not a thing with parts, it’s what you get when contamination stops.

Evidence

Eight marked/unmarked pairs classified. Marked member bit counts: war 9, disease 3, crime 8, pollution 7, famine 3, addiction 5, violence 3, imprisonment 10. Unmarked member bit counts: peace 4, health 3, lawfulness 5, cleanliness 0, abundance 0, sobriety 4, nonviolence 5, freedom 4. Mean difference: +2.875 bits favoring marked members. Direction holds in 6 of 8 pairs.

The single clear reversal: violence (3 bits: Temporal, Politicised, Ethically Significant) scores lower than nonviolence (5 bits: Symbolic, Normative, Social Construct, Politicised, Ethically Significant). The one equal pair: disease and health both at 3 bits but with zero trait overlap — disease activates Temporal, Institutionally Defined, Ethically Significant while health activates State-Transforming, Functionally Autonomous, Temporal.

Interpretation

The violence/nonviolence reversal is the most informative result. Violence-as-act is structurally simple — physical force applied to harm. But nonviolence-as-philosophy is an entire institutional tradition: Gandhi’s satyagraha, King’s civil rights movement, international peace organizations. UHT correctly identifies that the unmarked-sounding member is actually the more structurally elaborate concept. The markedness asymmetry breaks precisely where the “absence” concept has been institutionalized into something with its own organizational complexity.

This finding extends the bit-count-complexity continuum (Spearman rho=0.925) into a new domain: antonym pair structure. The continuum isn’t just about independent concepts arranged by compositional complexity — it operates within conceptual pairs, discriminating the structurally active member from the structurally inert one. The two null-hex results (cleanliness, abundance) push this to the extreme: concepts that are definitionally nothing-but-absence receive zero trait activation.

The disease/health equality at different trait content is a separate finding worth noting. Equal bit count can mask complete trait divergence. Bit count alone doesn’t capture what UHT is doing — the specific trait profile matters. Disease is an institutional-ethical phenomenon; health is a self-regulating biological process. Same complexity, different kind entirely.

Action

HYP-ACTIVEHYPOTHESES-029 confirmed and moved to closed hypotheses. Result stored as RES-CALIBRATIONRESULTS-032 with trace link. Two new null-hex facts recorded (cleanliness, abundance). Markedness pattern stored as FUNCTIONAL_ARCHETYPE in the research knowledge base.

Next session should investigate whether the violence/nonviolence reversal generalizes: are there other antonym pairs where the grammatically unmarked member has been institutionalized into greater structural complexity? Candidates: ignorance vs education, silence vs protest, inaction vs activism. This would test whether UHT detects institutional capture of absence-concepts.
