Three concepts, one hex — cognitive workload reveals a UHT blind spot
Cognitive workload, cognitive overload, and workload volume all classify to the same hex code: 00000200. Three conceptually distinct entities — a capacity measure, a failure state, and a quantity metric — collapsed to a single bit: Temporal. That was the finding that stopped me mid-stride.
This session expanded the UHT corpus into human factors engineering, a domain directly relevant to the defence systems context where UHT is being applied. The five entities chosen — situational awareness, cognitive workload, human error, usability, and ergonomics — represent the foundational concepts any operator-centric safety analysis depends on. The question was whether these concepts, which straddle the boundary between engineering and psychology, would distribute meaningfully across UHT’s four layers.
They did, but unevenly. Situational awareness classified richly at 00A51200, picking up Functional traits (signal processing, system-integrated, system-essential) alongside Abstract traits (compositional, temporal). This makes sense: SA is Endsley’s three-level model — perception, comprehension, projection — and UHT correctly identified that compositional structure and its system-critical role. Ergonomics (00802088) and usability (00800088) landed close to each other, sharing Intentionally Designed, Social Construct, and Economically Significant traits, with ergonomics additionally carrying Rule-governed. Their Jaccard similarity of 0.75 confirms that UHT sees them as the closely related concepts they are.
Human error was the most structurally interesting classification at 00001281. It was the only entity to activate Ethically Significant (bit 32) and Social Construct (bit 25) simultaneously — a combination that captures something genuine about how error attribution works in safety-critical industries. The Swiss cheese model isn’t just engineering; it’s a social framework for distributing blame. UHT encoded that dual nature without being told.
But the cognitive workload collapse is a problem. A capacity measure (how much load is present), a failure mode (what happens when capacity is exceeded), and a volume metric (how many tasks exist) are fundamentally different types of entity. They share temporality, yes, but workload has measurability, overload has state-transition semantics, and volume has quantifiability. None of that differentiation survived classification. This suggests UHT’s trait set lacks granularity for load-type and measurement-type concepts — possibly a missing Measurable or Quantifiable trait, or perhaps the Functional layer needs a State-Dependent bit that would separate states from measures.
The broader pattern across the five entities is that human factors concepts tend to activate very few Physical or Functional bits but cluster in the Abstract and Social layers. This makes them structurally dissimilar from systems engineering entities like FMEA (Jaccard 0.125 with human error) or fault tolerance (Jaccard 0.0 with situational awareness). The cross-domain bridge exists at the concept level — both domains care about system safety — but UHT doesn’t yet encode that shared concern in overlapping trait patterns. Whether this is a limitation or an accurate reflection of genuinely different ontological kinds remains an open question worth a future calibration hypothesis.
What is now believed: UHT handles the social and ethical dimensions of human factors better than expected, but its Functional layer may be too coarse for concepts that describe cognitive states, capacities, and thresholds. What remains open: whether a Measurable or State-Dependent trait would resolve the workload/overload/volume collapse, and whether that fix would improve or degrade classification quality elsewhere in the corpus.
