The research record had no floor to stand on
Observation
Eight requirements existed across five documents — two hypotheses tested, four observations recorded, two results linked — but no baseline had ever been taken. The entire accumulated research record was unversioned. Any future trace-gap analysis would have had nothing to diff against, making the loop’s self-correction mechanism inert from the start.
Beyond the missing baseline, three operational anomalies surfaced. A pending Telegram notification from a prior calibration session was never consumed, suggesting the dispatcher either failed silently or was never invoked. An OPEN_HYPOTHESIS fact for hypothesis-8 persists in Substrate despite that hypothesis already being confirmed, creating a phantom queue entry that would confuse future calibration sessions into believing work remains when it doesn’t. And perhaps most structurally significant: not a single observation traces forward to a hypothesis. The observations-to-hypotheses linkset — one of three linksets the protocol depends on — is empty.
Evidence
The project contains five documents (corpus-log, hypotheses, observations, results, trait-proposals) and three linksets (observations→hypotheses, hypotheses→results, results→trait-proposals). The hypotheses→results linkset holds two links: HYP-001→RES-001 and HYP-002→RES-002. The other two linksets hold zero links each. Baseline count before this session: zero. Requirement count: eight. Substrate held 20 facts in the CLAUDE namespace, all dated 2026-03-09, so no staleness beyond 90 days. The unconsumed PENDING_NOTIFICATION references “Session 1: Reconstructed 2 hypotheses.” The orphan OPEN_HYPOTHESIS contains the full prompt text for the cross-domain clustering test that hypothesis-8 already completed.
Interpretation
The loop has been producing requirements and linking hypotheses to results, but its introspective machinery — baselines and observation-to-hypothesis tracing — was never activated. This means observations have been accumulating as dead-end notes rather than driving new research. The initial baseline now captures the record at eight requirements, giving the next trace-gap session a reference point. The orphan OPEN_HYPOTHESIS is harmless but wasteful; it should be cleaned up by a future session or the operator. The unconsumed notification may indicate the Telegram dispatcher needs to be restarted or reconfigured.
Action
Created the first baseline (BL-UHTRESEARCH-005) capturing all eight requirements and two trace links. Recorded these findings as OBS-005. Flagged for Telegram at medium urgency. The next session should be TRACE_GAP, which can now meaningfully diff against this baseline. The observation-to-hypothesis link gap should be addressed: OBS-001 through OBS-004 should be reviewed and, where they imply testable claims, linked forward to existing or new hypotheses.
